The DEW stands for Daniel E. Williams who started off as the Stable Boy at the distillery, then called Daly’s distillery in the town of Tullamore. He ended up as the owner. Production was switched to Powers in Dublin during the sixties, only to be moved to Midleton. The brand was a blend also using casks from Bushmills.

In 2014 the brand was brought by William Grant, of Glenfiddich and Grants blend fame. They have rebuilt the distillery just outside of Tullamore, and it is now producing again. They use traditional Irish methods, triple distillation and using some un-malted barley. The Spirit is a high 80% ABV when it comes off the stills, suggesting a light, purer spirit.

This bottling  is a blend of all three types of Irish whiskey, pure pot-still, single malt and grain whiskey. It is non-chill filtered, and crafted to perfection in small exclusive batches, with each bottle uniquely numbered. Tullamore D.E.W. Phoenix is a high strength, triple distilled, nonchilled filtered blend of Irish Whiskey, rich in pot still, finished in Oloroso sherry cask. It is a medium-bodied whiskey with mellow complexity, deep leafy, malty notes and smooth vanilla oakiness.

Taste Rating Guide

1 - Light, good for beginners - an aperitif on a summers day, i.e. Glengoyne, Auchentoshan

2 - Also good for beginners but with more depth and body - a little stronger than 1, ie. Glenmorangie, Speyburn

3 - A dram for everyone, a little more complex so the palate requires a little more experience, i.e. Cragganmore, Macallan

4 - A stronger spirit, a big whisky with lots of character and body, excellent after dinner, i.e. Lagavulin, Laphroaig
