Glengyle Distillery

In the year 2000, Mr Wright - owner of Springbank Distillery in Campbeltown, brought Glengyle distillery which was adjacent to Springbank. As it was pretty much just some building in need of repair, it took 4 years to get it back into production, the cost in all was £1.7 million. The name Glengyle for whisky is owned by a different company and when they were approached to sell the rights to name they quoted an astronomical price, in fact it was more than they spent on the distillery, so Mr Wright said no and uses the name Kilkerran for the name of the whisky. Kilkerran was the name of the area before it was called Campbeltown.

This is the first regular bottling of Kilkerran, the whisky is matured 70% in American Oak ex-bourbon casks, and 30% in ex-sherry casks.

Nose: oak notes are dominant, followed by toasted marshmallows and dried fruit pudding, as well as cherries, marzipan and a hint of peat

Palate: initially fruity with citrus notes and orange peel, after this: vanilla, butterscotch, honeycomb and digestive biscuits can all be tasted and enjoyed

Finish: velvet and smooth with lemon meringue, to conclude, there’s an oiliness and a saltiness that you’d expect from a Campbeltown dram

Taste Rating Guide

1 - Light, good for beginners - an aperitif on a summers day, i.e. Glengoyne, Auchentoshan

2 - Also good for beginners but with more depth and body - a little stronger than 1, ie. Glenmorangie, Speyburn

3 - A dram for everyone, a little more complex so the palate requires a little more experience, i.e. Cragganmore, Macallan

4 - A stronger spirit, a big whisky with lots of character and body, excellent after dinner, i.e. Lagavulin, Laphroaig
