This distillery is situated in Crieff, Perthshire, founded in 1775, one of the oldest in the Highlands. It’s one of the main whiskies to be used in the Famous Grouse Blend – which sells about 36 million bottles a year. The distillery is home to the Famous Grouse Experience, which I believe is a sort of Disneyland for the whisky fan. Incidentally The Famous Grouse Experience is the second most visited tourist attraction in Scotland next to Edinburgh Castle, not sure if that’s a good or a bad thing.

As the name suggests this bottling is matured in three different types of cask; American White Oak ex-sherry Casks, European Oak Ex-sherry casks, and American Oak ex-Bourbon casks. This is a really elegant whisky with a lot of tropical fruity notes.

Taste Rating Guide

1 - Light, good for beginners - an aperitif on a summers day, i.e. Glengoyne, Auchentoshan

2 - Also good for beginners but with more depth and body - a little stronger than 1, ie. Glenmorangie, Speyburn

3 - A dram for everyone, a little more complex so the palate requires a little more experience, i.e. Cragganmore, Macallan

4 - A stronger spirit, a big whisky with lots of character and body, excellent after dinner, i.e. Lagavulin, Laphroaig
