Tasting Whisky

Whisky drinking can be a serious business and one way to get the most from our Dram is to follow these steps:

1. Choice of glass is important - a tulip shape is considered best so as to channel the aromas up to your nose - also enough space under the band to allow warming in the hand.

2. Look at the colour of the whisky - this can give a clue to the type of cask used, ex-bourbon or sherry casks are the most popular, sherry casked spirit is usually darker.

3. Nosing - have a good sniff, initially without water, this is one of my favourite moments - particularly when trying a new expression. Decide for yourself as smell is one of the most potent senses.

4. Swirl the whisky around the glass until you get 'cling' around the edge. Now, watch the droplets run down the sides, these are called 'legs' - the further apart these are, the more body your dram has.

5. Now take a small taste unreduced and let it sit on your tongue for a while and take in all the flavours...

6. Now some people like to drink their whisky neat, however by adding a drop or two of water, the nose and taste of your dram 'opens up' like a garden after a shower of rain.

Now drink and enjoy!!!
