• The Beam family have a history every bit as proud as any Scottish distilling dynasty. The accuracy of the family history is also every bit as suspect as any Scottish Distilling Dynasty.
• Jacob Beam (originally Boehm) started distilling in 1795 in Washington County, Kentucky. In 1854 Jacob’s Grandson David moved the operation nearer to the railroad at Clear Springs. David’s sons James and Park worked with him at the distillery.
• After Prohibition in 1933 Jim now aged 70 built a new distillery at Clermont, and ran it with his sons and brother Park.
• Jim handed over to his son Jeremiah, and then onto Jim’s grandson Booker Noe. Today the Master Distiller is Booker’s son Fred. Also Heaven Hill’s main distillers are Parker and Craig Beam – Parks Grandson and Great Grandson. And they say the Americans don’t have aristocracy.
• Today they have two distilleries at Clermont and Boston, Kentucky and are part of the Global Drinks business Beam-Suntory.
• This bottling is a 12 year old which is old for bourbon – more extremes of temperature faster maturation.

Taste Rating Guide

1 - Light, good for beginners - an aperitif on a summers day, i.e. Glengoyne, Auchentoshan

2 - Also good for beginners but with more depth and body - a little stronger than 1, ie. Glenmorangie, Speyburn

3 - A dram for everyone, a little more complex so the palate requires a little more experience, i.e. Cragganmore, Macallan

4 - A stronger spirit, a big whisky with lots of character and body, excellent after dinner, i.e. Lagavulin, Laphroaig
