GlenDronach distillery was founded in 1826 by James Allardice and creates some spectacular single malts. Previously owned by Billy Walker the distillery is part of the BenRiach distillery co. which was sold to BrownForman in 2016 and now the distillery falls under the watchful eye of Master Blender Rachel Barie. The spirit has more body than some of the lighter Speyside styles which is great for Sherry cask maturation (something GlenDronach are renowned for).

The whisky is rich and fruity benefiting from maturation in European oak ex-sherry casks. The 12 years old has some Oloroso Sherry cask matured whisky and some Pedro Ximinex Sherry cask matured whisky. PX is a sweet sherry so the whisky is a little sweeter like good quality chocolate, as well as having  rich dried fruit flavors.

Taste Rating Guide

1 - Light, good for beginners - an aperitif on a summers day, i.e. Glengoyne, Auchentoshan

2 - Also good for beginners but with more depth and body - a little stronger than 1, ie. Glenmorangie, Speyburn

3 - A dram for everyone, a little more complex so the palate requires a little more experience, i.e. Cragganmore, Macallan

4 - A stronger spirit, a big whisky with lots of character and body, excellent after dinner, i.e. Lagavulin, Laphroaig
