Glendalough meaning ‘Glen of two lakes’ is situated in the Wicklow Mountains just south of Dublin. The distillery was set up in 2015 by five friends from around Wicklow and Dublin and styles itself as Ireland’s first craft distillery.

This release is a Potstill whiskey, a method unique to Ireland, where you use both malted and unmalted barley, however it is still distilled on a traditional copper pot still, allowing for a more complex flavoursome spirit. However, in an effort to make this release even more unique to Ireland the whiskey has been matured in American Ex-Bourbon barrels before being transferred into fresh virgin Irish oak Hogsheads, created from oak trees around 130 years old growing on the mountains around the distillery. To ensure sustainability they promise to plant seven new oak trees for every one they fell.

Taste Rating Guide

1 - Light, good for beginners - an aperitif on a summers day, i.e. Glengoyne, Auchentoshan

2 - Also good for beginners but with more depth and body - a little stronger than 1, ie. Glenmorangie, Speyburn

3 - A dram for everyone, a little more complex so the palate requires a little more experience, i.e. Cragganmore, Macallan

4 - A stronger spirit, a big whisky with lots of character and body, excellent after dinner, i.e. Lagavulin, Laphroaig
