BenRinnes distillery is in Aberlour, Speyside. It was originally founded in 1826, but it was destroyed by flood and a new distillery was built in 1829, on a nearby site. Today it is owned by Diageo, the largest alcoholic drinks company in the world, the spirit is a great example of lighter Speyside, that offer a lot of flavour, thus most of BenRinnes ends up in Diageo’s blends. Fortunately, some however does remain as a single malt.
This release is bottled by Signatory owners of the Edradour distillery in the Highlands and is part of their range, bottled at 43% and having been matured in Ex-Bourbon barrels for all its life. Independent bottling’s like these can be a great way to try a different distillery you may not have come across before.
1: Light, good for beginners - an aperitif on a summers day, i.e. Glengoyne, Auchentoshan
2: Also good for beginners but with more depth and body - a little stronger than 1, ie. Glenmorangie, Speyburn
3: A dram for everyone, a little more complex so the palate requires a little more experience, i.e. Cragganmore, Macallan
4: A stronger spirit, a big whisky with lots of character and body, excellent after dinner, i.e. Lagavulin, Laphroaig
