Glenfiddich was built in 1886 by William Grant, the distillery not only remains family owned to this day but is also the best selling Single Malt Scotch Whisky in the world. When we say built by William Grant, it was William, his wife and children and one stone mason who actually built the distillery. He used second hand stills purchased from Cardhu Distillery, and continued at his day job, distillery manager at Mortlach, during the project. They first ran spirit on Christmas Day 1886.
The third in Glenfiddich’s experimental series, Malt Master Brian Kinsman has used casks that previously held Canadian ice wine. The grapes have to be picked by moonlight at -10˚C to produce an intensely sweet Icewine. Brian experimented with several French oak Icewine casks from a renowned Canadian winery, filling them with different Glenfiddich aged malts for up to six months. Only the rarer whiskies, those aged for 21 years, could cope with the extra Icewine intensity.
Tasting Notes.
Colour – Golden.
Nose - Tropical fruits and candied sweets are perfectly balanced with underlying wine notes.
Palate- Soft sweet notes reminiscent of candied fruit and Turkish delight develop into notes of lychee, soon met with a rich drying sensation from the Icewine.
Finish- Short and crisp.
1: Light, good for beginners - an aperitif on a summers day, i.e. Glengoyne, Auchentoshan
2: Also good for beginners but with more depth and body - a little stronger than 1, ie. Glenmorangie, Speyburn
3: A dram for everyone, a little more complex so the palate requires a little more experience, i.e. Cragganmore, Macallan
4: A stronger spirit, a big whisky with lots of character and body, excellent after dinner, i.e. Lagavulin, Laphroaig
