A classic Speyside distillery and whisky. Originally opened in 1897. It was closed between 1900 and 1965. The only reason it survived was due to Longmorn distillery on the same site using their malting floors. In 1985 they increased the number of stills from 2 to 4. In 1998 the owners at the time, Seagrams, shut it. In 2004 it was brought by two South African guys, Wayne and Geoff, along with veteran distiller Billy Walker. They sold their group to Brown Forman in 2016, for Benriach, Glendronach, Glenglassagh and the head office, bottling hall, warehousing and stock they got £285 million. The distillery makes both peated and un-peated whisky (having produced peated Speyside spirit since 1972) with around 28% of their production being peated spirit.

Taste Rating Guide

1 - Light, good for beginners - an aperitif on a summers day, i.e. Glengoyne, Auchentoshan

2 - Also good for beginners but with more depth and body - a little stronger than 1, ie. Glenmorangie, Speyburn

3 - A dram for everyone, a little more complex so the palate requires a little more experience, i.e. Cragganmore, Macallan

4 - A stronger spirit, a big whisky with lots of character and body, excellent after dinner, i.e. Lagavulin, Laphroaig
