Ardbeg is a big peaty whisky from the Isle of Islay.

A little bit of history, back in the early Eighties Ardbeg was closed by the then owners. The same people also owned Laphroaig distillery just down the road, and they found that Laphroaig didn’t go so well in their blends as Ardbeg. So in 1990 they started running Ardbeg for a few months of the year with staff from Laphroaig. This continued until 1996. Incidently, the young assistant Manager from Laphroaig who was in charge was Micky Heads, who today is Manager at Ardbeg.

This whisky dates back to that period.

Due to the limited supply only 1 bottle per customer.

Colour: Pale gold

Nose: Luscious tropical fruits give way to sweet smoke, soot and tar.

Taste: At first, smoked apple with a crumble topping. Notes of peppermint tea and sweet vanilla toffee flow into white pepper, clove, aniseed and eucalyptus oil. Then finally, some salty, woody tones.

Finish: A very long lingering, mouth-watering sweet smoke finish.

Taste Rating Guide

1 - Light, good for beginners - an aperitif on a summers day, i.e. Glengoyne, Auchentoshan

2 - Also good for beginners but with more depth and body - a little stronger than 1, ie. Glenmorangie, Speyburn

3 - A dram for everyone, a little more complex so the palate requires a little more experience, i.e. Cragganmore, Macallan

4 - A stronger spirit, a big whisky with lots of character and body, excellent after dinner, i.e. Lagavulin, Laphroaig
