Dailuaine Distillery, located in Banffshire in
Speyside, began in 1852 when William Mackenzie, a farmer from Carron, founded it. After Mackenzie died in 1865, his wife took over the management. Their son, Thomas, took the reins and rebuilt the distillery in 1884. In 1898, Thomas joined with others to form Dailuaine-Talisker Distilleries Ltd. A fire damaged the distillery in 1917, and workers rebuilt it in 1920.
It was later acquired by Distillers Company Limited in 1925, which eventually became part of Diageo, who continue to run the distillery today. It was the first distillery to feature the iconic Cupola roof design over its malting. Designed by Charles Doig, it remains a feature that survives to this day on many distilleries, regardless of the lack of onsite maltings.
Hunter Laing is a family-owned independent bottler of Scotch whisky, based in Glasgow. Founded in 2013 by Stewart Laing and his sons, Andrew and Scott, the company specialises in selecting and bottling rare and high-quality single malt and blended Scotch whiskies. The company also owns and operates Islay's newest distillery, Ardnahoe, who's inaugural release came in 2024.
The First Editions range features single barrel whiskies bottled at natural cask strength, with no colouring or chill filtration. The team at Hunter Laing select each cask for its unique character and collectability, much like a rare literary work. Label colours highlight the whisky region, and they number every bottle individually.
This Single Cask Dailuaine bottling was distilled in 2009, and bottled at 15 years old. The spirit matured in a Rioja Cask (HL21215), producing 257 bottles.
A nose of apples, berries and green foliage. The palate is sweet, with notes of salted caramel, forest fruits and chocolate. The finish is long, with lingering dark fruits.
