Glenlivet is an iconic distillery situated on Speyside. It is one of the best selling single malts in the world, owned by Pernod Ricard, the whisky has been very popular in America for a long time. The Gow family moved to the Spey valley during the upheaval following the 1745 Jacobite uprising. They changed their name to the English equivalent Smith. As in common with many of their neighbours they made whisky, without the bother of getting a licence for the still. When it became viable for a small-scale distiller to afford a licence in 1824 George Smith was one of the very first distilleries to acquire a licence.
The Captain's Reserve has been matured in ex-Bourbon and Sherry casks before being finished for the final maturation in specially selected Cognac casks and is their way of paying homage to Captain Bill Smith Grant, great grandson of their Founder George Smith.
Tasting Notes
Nose - Sweet and fruity aromas of honey and apricot jam, with notes of sweet cinnamon bread and subtle spicy liquorice.
Palate - Succulent flavours of mandarins in syrup, ripe poached pears and chocolate-dipped raisins.
Finish - incredibly soft and luscious.

Tasting Rating Guide
1: Light, good for beginners - an aperitif on a summers day, i.e. Glengoyne, Auchentoshan
2: Also good for beginners but with more depth and body - a little stronger than 1, ie. Glenmorangie, Speyburn
3: A dram for everyone, a little more complex so the palate requires a little more experience, i.e. Cragganmore, Macallan
4: A stronger spirit, a big whisky with lots of character and body, excellent after dinner, i.e. Lagavulin, Laphroaig
