White Peak Distillery was founded in 2016 and is located in Ambergate, Derbyshire. The brainchild of Max and Claire Vaughan, it is Derbyshire’s first full-scale craft distillery, with a proud focus on the unique Derbyshire provenance and heritage. The building itself was an old wire works and is now part of a UNESCO world heritage site. They released their first single malt whisky in 2022. In addition to this, they produce Shining Cliff gin, a cask-aged rum, and the 1876 Single Malt Cocktail, all of which they mature, bottle, and label on site. As our closest distillery, we are proud to have been a supporter of White Peak since they were first established.
The team at White Peak have put their lightly-peated spirit through a dual maturation to create Wire Works Coastal Smoke, distilled with two sets of cut points for added complexity. Matured initially in first fill ex-Bourbon Barrels from Heaven Hill, the spirit's finished in Islay whisky barrels.
Coastal Smoke introduces an extra dimension to the spirit, with exposure to two different types of peat. Mainland peat is used to malt the barley, therefore present in the distillate, and Islay peated whisky has seasoned the barrels used for final maturation, developing distinct layers of flavour in the final whisky.
Official Tasting Notes
Juicy tropical fruits, lemon meringue, complex peat profile.
Nose - Baked vanilla cheesecake, lemon meringue, campfire ash and candied ginger. Fruit salad sweets, fresh pineapple juice, smoked meats, murray mints.
Palate - Jaffa cakes, jelly baby sweets, banana, fresh mango and papaya. Peaches and cream, peppermint, rhubarb, fennel, macadamia nuts.
Finish - Malted biscuits, sage, lavender, soft lingering peat, orange marmalade, sherbet.

Tasting Rating Guide
1: Light, good for beginners - an aperitif on a summers day, i.e. Glengoyne, Auchentoshan
2: Also good for beginners but with more depth and body - a little stronger than 1, ie. Glenmorangie, Speyburn
3: A dram for everyone, a little more complex so the palate requires a little more experience, i.e. Cragganmore, Macallan
4: A stronger spirit, a big whisky with lots of character and body, excellent after dinner, i.e. Lagavulin, Laphroaig
