Johnny Drum is made at Willett Distillery, located on the outskirts of Bardstown,
Kentucky, founded in 1936 by Thompson Willett, a former distiller at the Moore, Willett and Frenke Distillery. Thompson Willett decided to establish his own distillery during the midst of the Great Depression, with a focus on producing high-quality bourbon.
The Willett Distillery remained in the Willett family for several generations. Thompson Willett's son, A. Lambert Willett, took over operations in the 1960s, followed by his son, Even G. Kulsveen, who became the master distiller in the 1980s. Like many bourbon distilleries, Willett faced challenges during the latter half of the 20th century, including a decline in demand for bourbon and economic downturns. However, in the early 21st century, the distillery experienced a revival under the leadership of Even's son, Drew Kulsveen. Under Drew's guidance, Willett began expanding its product line and experimenting with new techniques.
Johnny Drum Black Label is a Small Batch Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, and is 86 proof.
Official Tasting Notes
The nose is reminiscent of walking along the edge of the woods where flowers, mint and honeysuckle are growing at the base of pine trees. The palate is an oily caramel carrying notes of oak and a peppery finish.
