The Hearach is from Harris Distillery, founded in 2015 in Tabert on the Isle of Harris. The first legal distillery to be built on the island, their first single malt whisky was released in Autumn 2023. Alongside the whisky, they also make a gin.
In the far south-western corner of Spain lies the ancient region of Andalusia. Amid the hot and dusty hills of Huelva, the skilled craftspeople of sherry-makers José y Miguel Martín practice the age-old art of coopering casks with meticulous care. These casks are then filled by their wineries in Jerez.
The historic connection with this esteemed family business began in 2015, marking the start of sourcing specially selected Oloroso butts directly from them. The Oloroso sherry they produce is a dry, dark, and nutty fortified wine. Its influence on the wood imparts a bold and unmistakable richness to the spirit when the casks arrive in Harris and begin maturing The Hearach whisky, far from their original home.
Married in batches of around 12,000 bottles for a minimum of 16 weeks.

“Initially there are aromas of cinnamon, orange peel, and cloves, and there are green notes of mixed herbs and the creaminess of white chocolate. When sipped, I can taste wood smoke and walnuts shells. The dram develops with a herbal hint of dried thyme closely followed by burnt oranges. Spices then come through, like vanilla pods and a subtle sense of cloves, before a long leather and liquorice finish.”

Tasting Rating Guide
1: Light, good for beginners - an aperitif on a summers day, i.e. Glengoyne, Auchentoshan
2: Also good for beginners but with more depth and body - a little stronger than 1, ie. Glenmorangie, Speyburn
3: A dram for everyone, a little more complex so the palate requires a little more experience, i.e. Cragganmore, Macallan
4: A stronger spirit, a big whisky with lots of character and body, excellent after dinner, i.e. Lagavulin, Laphroaig
