Isle of Skye, in a carefully renovated old farmstead. As the second licensed distillery on Skye, the project received planning permission in 2002 under its original owner, Sir Iain Noble. Following his death, Mossburn Distillers, a division of Marussia Beverages, acquired the distillery.
Impressively, the roof of the building can be removed to provide access to the stills, allowing for their removal or the addition of more without disturbing the historic structure. The distillery houses two copper pot stills from Forsyths.
Torabhaig Taigh is the distillery's first permanent core release, with 'Taigh' meaning 'house' in Scottish Gaelic. This marks the beginning of a new era for Torabhaig, with a whisky that embodies their signature house style.
Torabhaig tend to favour first-fill Bourbon barrels. It's the perfect partner for their house style 'Smoke with Taste' - elegant, delicate and balanced expression of peat. Notes of vanilla, sweet spice and honey harmonise beautifully with gentle smoke. They've also used some refill Bourbon casks and Madeira casks. This allows the natural distillery character to shine through and brings a softening roundness.
Official Tasting Notes
Nose - Seaside embers and flint smoke are balanced by earthy woodland notes, evoking an autumnal forest walk. Sweet layers of baked apple pie, maple syrup, and gentle raisin richness emerge. A touch of clove, cinnamon spice, and a hint of cereal biscuit.
Palate - Light to medium-bodied. Soft smoke wrapped in vanilla custard, toasted almond and sweet dried fruits, all varied on a smooth, oily texture.
Finish - Gentle yet spirited, with toasted oak and a sprightly touch of tannin. Lingering vanilla and red fruits mingle with cinnamon and clove spice, before settling into a persistent, pleasant smoke that rounds it off with both warmth and approachability.
