The Harvey brothers established Bruichladdich Distillery on the shore of Loch Indaal on the Isle of
Islay in 1881. Rémy Cointreau currently owns the distillery. In contrast to many neighboring distilleries, Bruichladdich produces a lighter and softer unpeated whisky. Alongside the Bruichladdich range, they also produce Port Charlotte, a heavily peated range, and Octomore, an extremely heavily peated range. They style themselves as Progressive Hebridean Distillers, and are always looking for new ideas and initiatives.
Port Charlotte, named after the neighbouring village, is a peaty version, more like a typical Islay and the style the distillery made when it first opened in 1886.
Port Charlotte SC:01 2012 marries impeccable provenance with high-quality French Oak and 100% Islay grown barley. A combination of Sherry Butts and first and second fill American whiskey barrels were recasked at different points of maturation into some of the finest Sauternes Wine Casks from the left bank of the Garonne River in Bordeaux.
Official Tasting Notes
Colour - Marmalade.
Nose - Sweet, stone fruit and a delicate floral perfume, with hints of peaches in syrup, dried apricots, honeyed melon and ripe pineapple. Brown sugar, vanilla-fudge, caramel and marzipan, followed by honeysuckle and heather. Peat smoke and warm toasted oak come through with a little time to bring depth and complexity.
Palate - The warmth and supple texture of this dram elegantly coats the palate and brings a balance of light peat smoke and ripe fruit. Another sip confirms the beautiful viscosity and depth of flavour, beneath the delicate smoke comes earthy notes of leather and boot polish. The oak brings strength and sweet vanilla, chocolate and citrus to complement the waves of fruit.
Finish - The wonderful marine notes and earthy peat smoke linger with a citrus tang.
