Established in 1881, Bunnahabhain Distillery, located in Port Askaig on the Isle of
Islay, is one of the many distilleries in the region. The Islay Distillery Company initially owned Bunnahabhain, but the Highland Distilleries Company took over in 1887. Currently, Distell owns the distillery. In 1894, Bunnahabhain Distillery installed electric lighting, marking the earliest recorded use of electricity on Islay. While Bunnahabhain does typically offer a much milder spirit, it does produce two distinct styles of Scottish single malt whisky. The first is their main style, which is lightly peated but still rich and slightly oily in character. The other is a far more heavily peated expression, therefore creating a more traditional Islay style.
This year’s Bunnahabhain 12 Year Old Cask Strength takes its inspiration from distillery visitors who taste whisky straight from the cask - experiencing the spirit in its purest form. Created using a combination of first, second and re-fill Oloroso casks, this Islay Single Malt brings layered complexity, not overwhelming intensity. Expect balance, delicate sherry and the unfiltered, uncompromised, unmistakably Bunnahabhain character.
