John Grant, George Sellar, and Alexander Mackenzie founded Dalwhinnie Distillery in the bleak, wind-swept central Highlands in 1898. Located in the village of Dalwhinnie, in the Cairngorm National Park. The area actually falls into the Speyside region, despite being labelled as a
Highland whisky. Chosen for its access to clear spring water from Lochan-Doire-Uaine and abundant peat from the surrounding bogs, the site of the distillery makes it the highest in Scotland. Their visitors centre lies 1,154 ft (352 m) above sea level.
The name Dalwhinnie originates from the Gaelic word "Dail Chuinnidh," signifying a meeting place, reflecting the meeting of ancient cattle drovers' routes through the mountains. Diageo, the largest alcoholic drinks company in the world, owns the distillery today after it changed hands several times over the years.
The Distillers Edition brings new dimensions of taste exploration to the enjoyment of this Single Malt Whisky. The Master Distiller selects a small number of casks for double maturing in Oloroso Seasoned American Oak, which is chosen to complement the unique character of the malt whisky
Official Tasting Notes
Colour - Harvest gold. Long legs and good viscosity.
Body - Medium.
Nose - Lightly heathery and sweetly honeyed, a beautifully introduced aroma with a nutty-fruity waft of Oloroso. Tropical fruit notes of banana and pineapple give it a really appealing character, further developed by hints of fresh apricots, walnuts, and a little wood spice.
Palate - Creamy-smooth and coating, flowing lightly over the tongue. The taste is honey sweet, yet soon buzzes with warming nutmeg and pepperspice which nicely balance exotic, fruity hints of grape, peach and apricot.
Finish - Quite long, attractively sweet and malty yet also clean and with plenty of white pepper spiciness. Elegantly drying, vanilla-rich oak-spice lingers in the aftertaste.
