Distilled at Bruichladdich Distillery, Octomore stands as the most heavily peated whisky available. While each release exhibits some variations, they actively maintain the quality and distinct style of Octomore. Launched in 2008, Octomore is matured for five years, always super-heavily peated and bottled close to cask strength.
The Harvey brothers established Bruichladdich Distillery on the shore of Loch Indaal on the Isle of Islay in 1881. Rémy Cointreau currently owns the distillery. In contrast to many neighboring distilleries, Bruichladdich produces a lighter and softer unpeated whisky. Alongside this, they also produce Port Charlotte, a heavily peated range.
The backbone of the series, the 15.1 is the comparison from which the other expressions oscillate. Laying bare the high intensity peat smoke influence, maturation has taken place in a combination of first fill bourbon barrels and re-charred ex bourbon casks, mindfully extracting as much character from the wood as possible. Malted to 108.2 PPM, this is a raw and uncompromising single malt, demonstrating Octomore’s refined character, balancing smooth vanilla custard and sweet charred oak with heady peat smoke.

Colour - Winter Sun.
Nose - Caramel and vibrant citrus open on the nose, delicately wrapped in Octomore’s dry, earthy peat smoke. Spicy aniseed, vanilla and smooth custard follow, with a tropical fruit, geranium and a hint of ginger complementing the sweet malt.
Palate - Immediate heat on the palate, balanced with sweet dry malt and earthy smoke. A refreshing medley of mango, banana and apricot jam cuts through the heady peat, beautifully rounded with vanilla custard and toffee. A drop of water allows the smoke to open and brings subtle marine notes and warm sand.
Finish - Peat smoke, vanilla and sweet charred oak settle on the finish, with a fresh marine crispness.

Tasting Rating Guide
1: Light, good for beginners - an aperitif on a summers day, i.e. Glengoyne, Auchentoshan
2: Also good for beginners but with more depth and body - a little stronger than 1, ie. Glenmorangie, Speyburn
3: A dram for everyone, a little more complex so the palate requires a little more experience, i.e. Cragganmore, Macallan
4: A stronger spirit, a big whisky with lots of character and body, excellent after dinner, i.e. Lagavulin, Laphroaig
