White Peak Distillery was founded in 2016 and is located in Ambergate, Derbyshire. The brainchild of Max and Claire Vaughan, it is Derbyshire’s first full-scale craft distillery, with a proud focus on the unique Derbyshire provenance and heritage. The building itself was an old wire works and is now part of a UNESCO world heritage site. They released their first single malt whisky in 2022. In addition to this, they produce Shining Cliff gin, a cask-aged rum, and the 1876 Single Malt Cocktail, all of which they mature, bottle, and label on site. As our closest distillery, we are proud to have been a supporter of White Peak since they were first established.
The inspiration for the Shining Cliff Gin lies right behind the Distillery, in the ancient woodland of Shining Cliff Woods. The team at the distillery wanted to create a style of gin that reflects this beautiful location.
This spiced gin distills eleven botanicals, incorporating marjoram, cardamom, cassia, meadow sweet, and orrice root among them. This consequently results in a smooth texture with a distinctive and well-balanced spiced earth flavor.
‘Betty’ is the distillery's 600 litre spirits still, used to make this award-winning gin. Named after the ancient ‘Betty Kenny’ yew tree found in Shining Cliff Woods, the illustrative wood carving of the ancient yew tree that features on their bottles. Luke and Betty Kenny were 17th century charcoal burners who lived and plied their craft in woods. They travelled each year from Papplewick to help with charcoal burning, and eventually stayed on permanently to live in the woods.

Tasting Rating Guide
1: Light, good for beginners - an aperitif on a summers day, i.e. Glengoyne, Auchentoshan
2: Also good for beginners but with more depth and body - a little stronger than 1, ie. Glenmorangie, Speyburn
3: A dram for everyone, a little more complex so the palate requires a little more experience, i.e. Cragganmore, Macallan
4: A stronger spirit, a big whisky with lots of character and body, excellent after dinner, i.e. Lagavulin, Laphroaig
