Located in a 150-year-old renovated dairy barn, Whistlepig was founded in 2007 by Raj Bhakta, a former contestant on the TV show 'The Apprentice'. He purchased a farm in Shoreham, Vermont, with the intention of creating a top-notch rye whiskey distillery. Raj partnered with Dave Pickerell, a legendary figure in the whiskey industry known for his tenure as Master Distiller at Maker's Mark. Pickerell helped WhistlePig refine its whiskey-making process and brought invaluable expertise to the table.
Whistlepig's first product was released in 2010, and since then they have continued to expand their range. In 2017, Whistlepig announced that it had sold a significant stake of the company to global drink giant, Moet Hennessy.
They use Vermont Oak Barrels made from trees harvested from their own farm and the surrounding area. Vermont is about as far north as oak trees can grow. The shorter growing seasons leads to oak trees with more growth rings. When ageing whiskey encounters a growth ring in a barrel it imparts flavour, so the Vermont Oak barrels, with custom chars & toast, bring depth and complexity to their whiskies.
This bottling, their Old World Rye 12 years old - 86-proof, 43% ABV, is a marriage of three finishes, each giving different flavours. After maturing for 12 years in New American Oak, the spirit is divvied into one of three barrels - ex-Madeira (63%), ex- Sauternes (30%) and ex-Port (7%) casks.

Nose - Caramel, vanilla, and winter fruit.
Palate - Rye spice, apricots, plums, raisins, dates, and honey.
Finish - Dark chocolate, winter fruit, caramel, and vanilla.

Tasting Rating Guide
1: Light, good for beginners - an aperitif on a summers day, i.e. Glengoyne, Auchentoshan
2: Also good for beginners but with more depth and body - a little stronger than 1, ie. Glenmorangie, Speyburn
3: A dram for everyone, a little more complex so the palate requires a little more experience, i.e. Cragganmore, Macallan
4: A stronger spirit, a big whisky with lots of character and body, excellent after dinner, i.e. Lagavulin, Laphroaig
