Distilled at Bruichladdich Distillery, Octomore stands as the most heavily peated whisky available. While each release exhibits some variations, they actively maintain the quality and distinct style of Octomore. Launched in 2008, Octomore is matured for five years, always super-heavily peated and bottled close to cask strength.
The Harvey brothers established Bruichladdich Distillery on the shore of Loch Indaal on the Isle of
Islay in 1881. Rémy Cointreau currently owns the distillery. In contrast to many neighboring distilleries, Bruichladdich produces a lighter and softer unpeated whisky. Alongside this, they also produce Port Charlotte, a heavily peated range.
Distilled from the same batch of Scottish grown barley as the 15.1, Octomore 15.2 is also malted to 108.2PPM. Using a robust combination of second fill wine and second fill bourbon casks, the spirit finishes in first fill Cognac casks. This unique trifecta adds layers of intrigue, resulting in a complex yet elegant single malt. Hints of nutmeg, toasted oak and caramel add smoothness to the palate, the delicate floral character coming to the fore.
Official Tasting Notes
Colour - Hebridean Sand.
Nose - Sweet citrus, lime zest and lemon meringue pie open on the nose, followed by toasted oak and a hint of earthy smoke. A medley of tropical fruit enhances the vibrancy of the single malt whisky, balanced with woody spices, smoked honey, toasted bread, and roasted coffee.
Palate - Viscous in texture, the sumptuously smooth spirit brings vanilla custard, caramel, toffee and a crack of black pepper. Charred oak, cinnamon and a hint of nutmeg provide added depth with pear drops and dried apricot cutting through Octomore’s inimitable peat smoke.
Finish - An unmistakable maritime quality lands on a finish. With waves of salt spray settling on the palate while peat embers linger.
