In its early years, Glenmorangie operated as a small-scale distillery. By the late 19th century, it began to gain a good reputation. The distillery underwent several ownership changes throughout the 20th century. In 1918, the Macdonald family, through their company Macdonald and Muir, acquired Glenmorangie. The family played a crucial role in expanding the distillery's production capacity and market reach. Today, the company is operated by Moet Hennessy, who acquired the brand in 2004.
Glenmorangie is famous for its exceptionally tall stills, which stand at 8 meters. These tall stills are among the tallest in Scotland and contribute to the whisky’s distinctive light and complex character.
The whisky that goes into this Signet bottling includes some distilled in 1974 - when the old floor maltings were operating. This bottling features two exclusive ingredients. The first ingredient is Cadboll Barley, which the distillery exclusively uses for only two weeks each year. This gives a buttery, creamy character to the whisky. They also use High Roast "Chocolate" Malt, a rare and expensive product, which gives a roast coffee character.
Missouri Oak also comes up. They use some Virgin Casks, with slow grown white oak specially made. This gives off rich sweetness of chocolate, vanilla and fudge. Some used bourbon casks, bringing floral notes, and some Oloroso Sherry Casks, giving flavours of fruit cake, raisins and dried fruit.
