When considering a name for a new Campbeltown Malt, Kilkerran emerged as a fitting choice, diverging from the convention of old Campbeltown distilleries usually adopting names associated with a Glen, a practice more commonly linked with the Speyside region.
Glengyle Distillery is a Scotch whisky distillery located in Campbeltown, Scotland. Establishing its official status in 2004, Glengyle Distillery's roots extend to the historic Glengyle Distillery, active in the 19th century before ceasing operations in 1925.
Owned by the Mitchell family, the distillery operates under the Mitchell's Glengyle Limited company. The Mitchells also own the renowned Springbank Distillery in Campbeltown. Many consider Kilkerran the "sister distillery" to Springbank, as it shares traditional production methods and a dedication to craftsmanship.
This is the Kilkerran 12 year old, which has been matured in a combination of both Bourbon and Sherry casks. Lightly peated and bottled at their standard bottling strength of 46% ABV, it provides a fitting introduction to the Kilkerran range, with characteristic citrus notes and an oiliness on the palate.
Official Tasting Notes
Nose - Notes of sweet confectionery introduce this dram, with turkish delight, pear drops and marzipan apparent on the nose. There are hints of subtle peat smoke, like toasted marshmallows by a campfire.
Palate - Initially zesty with citrus notes of lemon cheesecake and an oiliness typical of a Campbeltown whisky. Peat smoke, leather bound books and peppery, spicy notes develop over time, along with sweet sticky toffee pudding.
Finish - The peat smoke carries through to the finish in campfire embers. Sweet hints of pecan pie and butterscotch.
Limited to 1 bottle per customer.

1: Light, good for beginners - an aperitif on a summers day, i.e. Glengoyne, Auchentoshan
2: Also good for beginners but with more depth and body - a little stronger than 1, ie. Glenmorangie, Speyburn
3: A dram for everyone, a little more complex so the palate requires a little more experience, i.e. Cragganmore, Macallan
4: A stronger spirit, a big whisky with lots of character and body, excellent after dinner, i.e. Lagavulin, Laphroaig
