Paul John whisky is manufactured by John Distillers, located in Goa, India. The whisky brand was set up in 2012 and is named after the founder and chairman of John Distillers. The company sources as much of the raw materials from India as possible. The only exceptions is this are their casks and the peat (when they use it), everything else, including the barley, is Indian and grown at the foot of the Himalayas - this barley gives their whisky a slightly buttery note.
The angel share in Goa is high, at 8 - 10 % per annum, therefore accelerating the maturation of the whisky tremendously. The whisky matures in specially chosen charred American white oak barrels, stored in two distinct warehouses, imparting unique character to each whisky and individual flavour to every cask.

Official Tasting Notes
Colour - Liquid Gold.
Nose - After the slightest whiff of smoke, a dizzying array of Manuka honey, prickly spice and red liquorice takes over.
Palate - This melt-in-the-mouth malt has the most profound flavours crashing in like waves. At first, the delivery feels sublimely silky and studded with oak-like honey. The surprise of a hefty second wave of spice comes next, followed by a cloudy, smoky feel that coats the roof of the mouth. Ultimately, this leaves a tidal wave of dry molasses, peaty soot and a degree of copper in its wake.
Finish - Bold has a light finish with a tinge of copper slowly making its presence known. You can also sense a gorgeous smoked mocha shaped by delicate and intricate spices.

1: Light, good for beginners - an aperitif on a summers day, i.e. Glengoyne, Auchentoshan
2: Also good for beginners but with more depth and body - a little stronger than 1, ie. Glenmorangie, Speyburn
3: A dram for everyone, a little more complex so the palate requires a little more experience, i.e. Cragganmore, Macallan
4: A stronger spirit, a big whisky with lots of character and body, excellent after dinner, i.e. Lagavulin, Laphroaig
