Situated in the Brecon Beacons National Park, Penderyn Distillery was founded in 2000. It broke the century-long hiatus in Welsh whisky production that began in 1894, when Penderyn Distillery crafted its first whisky. Penderyn was first conceived in the late 1990s, by a group of friends who wanted to establish the first whisky distillery in Wales in over a century. They selected the village of Penderyn as the location due to the fresh natural spring water. They have since open two more distilleries, in Llandudno in 2021 and in Swansea in 2023.
Penderyn have a unique single-pot still designed by Dr David Faraday, a descendant of the Victorian scientist, Michael Faraday. Installed in 2000, it produces a spirit at an industry high draw of 92%, making Penderyn's whiskies light, fruity and flavoursome.
Copperopolis is the 12th edition in Penderyn’s Icons Of Wales series, and has been created to celebrate Swansea's history as the global hub of copper smelting. From 1720, Swansea earned the name ‘Copperopolis’ by smelting 50% of the world’s copper and 90% of the UK’s copper in the area. Today, Penderyn’s new distillery stands in the powerhouse of the old copperworks building in Swansea. The distillers finished the whisky in sweet red wine casks, creating a rich, fruity single malt.
Official Tasting Notes
Nose - Floral and fruity. Scent of orange blossom, notes of peaches, cherries and orange peel. Sweet vanilla and honey, with a light spice of dried fruits.
Palate - Luscious mouthfeel. Rich sweetness of caramel and honey. Bouquet of dried fruits; raisins, figs and light oak spices.
Finish - Dry oak remains, with a citrus sweetness and a dust of cocoa to the end.

Tasting Rating Guide
1: Light, good for beginners - an aperitif on a summers day, i.e. Glengoyne, Auchentoshan
2: Also good for beginners but with more depth and body - a little stronger than 1, ie. Glenmorangie, Speyburn
3: A dram for everyone, a little more complex so the palate requires a little more experience, i.e. Cragganmore, Macallan
4: A stronger spirit, a big whisky with lots of character and body, excellent after dinner, i.e. Lagavulin, Laphroaig
