The Nelstrop damily have a long history in farming, and James had a long-time ambition of opening a distillery. The company continues to be an independent, family owned business, born out of the family's passion for single malt whisky.
Built for the sole intention of handcrafting the finest English Single Malt, at the time of the distillery's completion, it was England's first whisky distillery in over 100 years. King Charles III officially opened the distillery in March 2007.
The English Distillery offer whiskies of a wide range of flavours. They produce both peated and un-peated whiskies and also use a variety of different casks for certain releases. They have whisky maturing in their warehouses to last 40 years. Alongside the single malts, they also produce a range of whisky liqueurs.
The English Wine Cask Matured is part of their small batch range, showcasing the expertise and passion of the distillery team in using various techniques to bring out the depth of flavours in the exceptional stocks of single malt whiskies. This bottling is a wonderful marriage of four second-fill wine casks. A second fill cask gives slightly less colour but a very gentle malt.
Official Tasting Notes
Nose - Cocoa, praline, black cherries, citrus peel, apricots, almonds, slight tobacco and soft toffee. A little water and the fruits become more pronounced.
Palate - This gentle palate reminds us of dried fruits and buttery shortbread.
Finish - A lovely, smooth, fruity finish. Not too short and not too long.

Tasting Rating Guide
1: Light, good for beginners - an aperitif on a summers day, i.e. Glengoyne, Auchentoshan
2: Also good for beginners but with more depth and body - a little stronger than 1, ie. Glenmorangie, Speyburn
3: A dram for everyone, a little more complex so the palate requires a little more experience, i.e. Cragganmore, Macallan
4: A stronger spirit, a big whisky with lots of character and body, excellent after dinner, i.e. Lagavulin, Laphroaig
