Isle of Skye, in a carefully renovated old farmstead. As the second licensed distillery on Skye, the project received planning permission in 2002 under its original owner, Sir Iain Noble. Following his death, Mossburn Distillers, a division of Marussia Beverages, acquired the distillery.
Impressively, the roof of the building can be removed to provide access to the stills, allowing for their removal or the addition of more without disturbing the historic structure. The distillery houses two copper pot stills from Forsyths.
This bottling is the last in the Allt Gleann: The Legacy Series. Bottled for the first time at batch strength, directly from a small lots of casks without chill filtration, colouring or reduction. They have used ex-Bourbon American Oak casks to mature this spirit. The peat in the malt is 78 ppm, but that reduces to 22.8ppm in the whisky. This is a robustly peated spirit with a deceptively refined character, resulting in a complex and characterful maritime whisky.
This release has all the typicity of Torabhaig that you would expect – bonfire smoke, salinity, maltiness, and sweet, vanilla-led oaky spice.
