White Peak Distillery was founded in 2016 and is located in Ambergate, Derbyshire. The brainchild of Max and Claire Vaughan, it is Derbyshire’s first full-scale craft distillery, with a proud focus on the unique Derbyshire provenance and heritage. The building itself was an old wire works and is now part of a UNESCO world heritage site. They released their first single malt whisky in 2022. In addition to this, they produce Shining Cliff gin, a cask-aged rum, and the 1876 Single Malt Cocktail, all of which they mature, bottle, and label on site. As our closest distillery, we are proud to have been a supporter of White Peak since they were first established.
Over the past few years, the team at White Peak have carefully selected a limited number of wine casks for both full and dual maturation. They store these casks on-site at the distillery, selecting them to complement their house style, and have released three different wine cask finishes. The first launch from the Wire Works Wine Series was Amarone, with Madeira and Moscatel following.
Moscatel is a sweet fortified wine from Portugal's Douro Valley, made from Moscatel grape. Grape brandy is added to halt fermentation and preserve sweetness. The mixture stays with the grape skins for at least three months to enhance flavour. The wine ages in oak casks for 18 months minimum.
Limited release of 651 bottles.
Official Tasting Notes
Sweet & oily, with peaches, apricots, orange peel, and crème brûlée.
Nose - Dried apricots, flaked almonds, icing sugar, orange fondant, fresh cherries, papaya, sultanas, dolly mixture, strawberry laces, floral.
Palate - Marzipan, fresh orange peel, gooseberries, elderflower, brandy baskets, peaches and cream. Cinnamon buns, Caramac, yoghurt coated raisins, candied ginger, pineapple cubes.
Finish - Cranberries, nutmeg, orange marmalade, creme brûlée, sweet chilli.

Tasting Rating Guide
1: Light, good for beginners - an aperitif on a summers day, i.e. Glengoyne, Auchentoshan
2: Also good for beginners but with more depth and body - a little stronger than 1, ie. Glenmorangie, Speyburn
3: A dram for everyone, a little more complex so the palate requires a little more experience, i.e. Cragganmore, Macallan
4: A stronger spirit, a big whisky with lots of character and body, excellent after dinner, i.e. Lagavulin, Laphroaig
