Balmenach Distillery is located in Cromdale, in the
Speyside whisky producing region. Established in 1824 by James McGregor, it was one of the first distilleries in Scotland to obtain a license for the production of Scotch whisky. The name 'Balminoch' comes from the Gaelic phrase 'Am Baile Meadhnach', meaning 'the middle farm'. Inverhouse Distillers has owned the distillery since 1997.
This bottling of Balmenach is part of the Hepburn’s Choice range from Hunter Laing. It comprises whiskies bottled either from specially-selected single casks or from small batches of two to three casks. Always bottled at 46% alcohol, and naturally without artificial colouring or chill-filtration.
Each bottling is chosen to showcase the specific characteristics of one of Scotland’s whisky producing regions, or those of a distillery in particular. Named in honour of Hunter Laing directors’ late maternal grandfather, William Hepburn. A connoisseur of his homeland’s whiskies, he travelled the globe with his job in the Diplomatic Service. The team at Hunter Laing believe these bottlings would have been 'Hepburn’s Choice'.
A single cask bottling, distilled in 2011 and bottled in 2013 after maturing for 11 years. Expect notes of ginger, pepper and orange zest.
