John Steward and Robert Robertson founded the distillery in 1798, but it has passed through several owners over the years. Currently, Diageo, the largest alcoholic drinks company in the world, owns the company. The distillery can produce 2.5 million litres of spirit per annum and attracts 35,000 visitors a year.
A full, rich and spicy 12 year old single malt whisky. Slightly dry on the finish, this expression benefits from a lot of sherry cask matured whisky which gives it a rich sherry, toffee nose with rich fruitcake, raisins and sultanas palate and a slight hint of minty herbal notes. An interesting whisky with an unusual sweet aftertaste.

Colour - Polished mahogany.
Body - Medium to full-bodied, but not cloying.
Nose - Muscat grapes and Madeira wine, brimstone in the background, even tar. Dried apricots in the foreground, and treacle toffee.
Palate - Rich and mouth-filling, with a good balance.
Finish - A curious sweetness is introduced at the end after the acidity and dryish finish has passed.

Tasting Rating Guide
1: Light, good for beginners - an aperitif on a summers day, i.e. Glengoyne, Auchentoshan
2: Also good for beginners but with more depth and body - a little stronger than 1, ie. Glenmorangie, Speyburn
3: A dram for everyone, a little more complex so the palate requires a little more experience, i.e. Cragganmore, Macallan
4: A stronger spirit, a big whisky with lots of character and body, excellent after dinner, i.e. Lagavulin, Laphroaig
