Blanton's Bourbon, introduced in 1984, is known as the first commercially sold single barrel bourbon. Created by Elmer T. Lee, a master distiller at Buffalo Trace Distillery (then called George T. Stagg Distillery), in honour of Colonel Albert B. Blanton. He was a former distillery president who often reserved the best barrels for private use.
Blanton's helped revive interest in premium bourbon during a time when American whiskey sales were in decline. Famous for the collectible horse and jockey bottle stoppers, each bottle label contains details about the barrel and bottling date. Buffalo Trace Distillery in Kentucky continues to produce this world renowned whiskey.
Taken from the center-cut or middle sections of the famous Warehouse H, Blanton’s Original Single Barrel was once designated for ambassadors, dignitaries, and Colonel Blanton’s family and friends. Today, everyone has access to the world’s first single barrel bourbon.
The taste profile is sweet, with notes of citrus and oak. The creamy vanilla nose is teased with caramel and butterscotch, all underscored by familiar baking spices such as clove, nutmeg, or cinnamon. Blanton’s Original set the standard for single barrel bourbons in 1984. Bottled at 46.5% ABV (93 Proof).
Tasting Rating Guide
1: Light, good for beginners - an aperitif on a summers day, i.e. Glengoyne, Auchentoshan
2: Also good for beginners but with more depth and body - a little stronger than 1, ie. Glenmorangie, Speyburn
3: A dram for everyone, a little more complex so the palate requires a little more experience, i.e. Cragganmore, Macallan
4: A stronger spirit, a big whisky with lots of character and body, excellent after dinner, i.e. Lagavulin, Laphroaig
