Established in 1881, Bunnahabhain Distillery, located in Port Askaig on the Isle of Islay, is one of the many distilleries in the region. The Islay Distillery Company initially owned Bunnahabhain, but the Highland Distilleries Company took over in 1887. Currently, Distell owns the distillery. In 1894, Bunnahabhain Distillery installed electric lighting, marking the earliest recorded use of electricity on Islay. While Bunnahabhain does typically offer a much milder spirit, it does produce two distinct styles of Scottish single malt whisky. The first is their main style, which is lightly peated but still rich and slightly oily in character. The other is a far more heavily peated expression, therefore creating a more traditional Islay style.
This single malt has been bottled by Gordon and MacPhail, an independent bottler in Elgin. It is part of their Discovery range. Designed to highlight and introduce whisky drinkers to the core flavour profiles of single malts, the Discovery range is excellent for people wanting to try something different. Using a variety of distilleries their aim is to showcase the flavours whisky develops using either Bourbon Casks, Sherry Casks or Peated Malt. Gordon and MacPhail mature the spirit using their own casks.

Colour - Lightest Gold.
Aroma - Sweet and creamy; vanilla custard topped with crushed meringue and zesty lemon curd. Fresh cut grass swirls with aromas of the seaside; sea weed, brine, and sea salt. Light peat smoke envelopes the nose throughout.
Taste - Candied lime and lemon sit upon a bed of stewed pear and currants. Nuances of velvety milk chocolate lead to richer leather undertones with hints of liquorice.
Finish - Long and smooth on the finish with refined woody tones, tobacco, and bonfire embers.

Tasting Rating Guide
1: Light, good for beginners - an aperitif on a summers day, i.e. Glengoyne, Auchentoshan
2: Also good for beginners but with more depth and body - a little stronger than 1, ie. Glenmorangie, Speyburn
3: A dram for everyone, a little more complex so the palate requires a little more experience, i.e. Cragganmore, Macallan
4: A stronger spirit, a big whisky with lots of character and body, excellent after dinner, i.e. Lagavulin, Laphroaig
