Established in 1881, Bunnahabhain Distillery, located in Port Askaig on the Isle of
Islay, is one of the many distilleries in the region. The Islay Distillery Company initially owned Bunnahabhain, but the Highland Distilleries Company took over in 1887. Currently, Distell owns the distillery. In 1894, Bunnahabhain Distillery installed electric lighting, marking the earliest recorded use of electricity on Islay. While Bunnahabhain does typically offer a much milder spirit, it does produce two distinct styles of Scottish single malt whisky. The first is their main style, which is lightly peated but still rich and slightly oily in character. The other is a far more heavily peated expression, therefore creating a more traditional Islay style.
Meaning 'Helmsman' in Scots Gaelic, Stiuireadair, is the first Bunnahabhain release paying homage to the Bunnahabhain Helmsman, who adorns every bottle. But this Helmsman is no mere icon, he is a reminder of Bunnahabhain's origins. A link to the past, he is a symbol of their enduring appreciation of the sea by which we are surrounded.
To create Stiuireadair, their Master Blender has selected first and second fill Sherry casks of varying ages and warehouse locations. This has constructed a dram that truly exposes the coastal nature of the Bunnahabhain single malt whisky, whilst not losing the sherry influence everyone knows and loves in the famous 12 year old.
