Glendalough, meaning ‘Glen of Two Lakes’, is situated in the Wicklow Mountains just south of Dublin. The distillery was set up in 2015, by five friends from around Wicklow and Dublin. It styles itself as Ireland’s first craft distillery.
This release is a Pot Still whiskey, a style distinctive to Ireland, which uses both malted and unmalted barley. Despite this unique blend, it's still distilled in a traditional copper pot still. The whiskey is first matured in American ex-bourbon barrels before being transferred to fresh virgin Irish Oak hogsheads. These casks are made from oak trees approximately 130 years old, grown in the mountains surrounding the distillery. To ensure sustainability, the distillery commits to planting seven new oak trees for every one that is felled.
The whiskey is finished for up to a year in rare virgin Irish Oak casks, marking a significant milestone for Irish whiskey. Each bottle is individually numbered and can be traced back to its specific cask and tree the oak was sourced from. Every winter, Glendalough harvests 140-year-old trees from the ancient oak forests in the mountains near the distillery. This marks the start of a year-long process that culminates in the creation of an Irish oak hogshead. These special casks are then filled with pot still whiskey, which is considered quintessentially Irish. The higher levels of toasted oak and vanilla flavours imparted by the Irish oak complement and balance the classic pot still spices.
Official Tasting Notes
Nose - Sweet and citrus with vanilla, caramel, banana, treacle, with earthy, herbal undertones of oak spices and leather.
Taste - Chewy, warm and buttery, pot still malt and spices, toffeed pears, treacle, cinnamon, nutmeg and distinctive toasted, tannic oak.
Finish - Long with creamy vanilla, almond, forest fruit and toasted Irish oak.

Tasting Rating Guide
1: Light, good for beginners - an aperitif on a summers day, i.e. Glengoyne, Auchentoshan
2: Also good for beginners but with more depth and body - a little stronger than 1, ie. Glenmorangie, Speyburn
3: A dram for everyone, a little more complex so the palate requires a little more experience, i.e. Cragganmore, Macallan
4: A stronger spirit, a big whisky with lots of character and body, excellent after dinner, i.e. Lagavulin, Laphroaig
