Henstone was first conceived in 2016 by four friends and their mutual yearning to create sensational 'top-shelf' spirits. Established in Oswestry, Shropshire, Henstone is the brainchild of Chris and Alexandra Toller, and Shane and Alison Parr. Currently located at the Stonehouse Brewery site, the company's aim is to create the best quality products for people who enjoy sophisticated, classic spirits, but with that small batch twist.
The name Henstone originates from the family homes of the original co-founders. Chris and Alex live in an ex-public house called “The Hen and Chickens”, whilst Shane and Alison live in “Stone House”. Alongside whisky, they also produce gin, rum and vodka, alongside a corn liquor.
Henstone Distillery’s production takes place in a 1,000-litre copper pot still, named Hilda, sourced from Kothe in Germany. The distillery also has a strong emphasis on sustainability, using locally sourced grains and botanicals where possible and supporting the local agricultural community. Their eco-friendly approach, combined with small-batch production, allows them to maintain control over quality while reducing environmental impact.
Launched on 28th January 2020, this is Henstone's ‘Bourbon Equivalent’ which they call Old Dog Corn Liquor. They produce a corn, wheat and barley mash which, following fermentation, is distilled by the distillery in Hilda, their 1000 litre pot/column hybrid still. Following this, the liquid is then matured in new American Oak casks.
The name ‘Old Dog’ comes from a local coal mine shaft in the Morda valley. The ‘Corn Liquor’ part of the name describes the contents of the bottle. This is a truly unique product, a must try!

This bottling has notes of corn, tropical fruits and pear, alongside caramel, honey, pepper and oak. There is a slightly creamy texture on the palate along with hints of vanilla and smoke followed by a sweet and spicy finish.

Tasting Rating Guide
1: Light, good for beginners - an aperitif on a summers day, i.e. Glengoyne, Auchentoshan
2: Also good for beginners but with more depth and body - a little stronger than 1, ie. Glenmorangie, Speyburn
3: A dram for everyone, a little more complex so the palate requires a little more experience, i.e. Cragganmore, Macallan
4: A stronger spirit, a big whisky with lots of character and body, excellent after dinner, i.e. Lagavulin, Laphroaig
