Founded in 1857 by John Philip Wiser in Prescott, Ontario, J.P. Wiser’s is one of Canada’s oldest and most enduring whisky brands. Wiser, originally from the U.S., took over his uncle’s distillery and quickly turned it into a thriving operation. By the late 1800s, it was one of the largest whisky producers in Canada.
Wiser was a pioneer — not just in whisky production, but in branding too. He was one of the first to bottle his whisky (rather than sell it in barrels), and his emphasis on consistency and craftsmanship helped set the standard for Canadian whisky.
Today, the brand continues to honour its legacy at the Hiram Walker distillery in Windsor, Ontario, under the guidance of master blender Dr. Don Livermore. He's renowned for his innovative, almost artistic, approach to whisky-making - a craft that’s earned him global recognition.
J.P. Wiser’s 18 Year Old is an exceptionally smooth Canadian corn whisky. Crafted from double-distilled corn and aged for at least 18 years in seasoned Canadian whisky casks, it reveals refined notes of baked apple, pine needles, and warming winter spice. The whisky's maturation in Southern Ontario, where extreme seasonal swings shape its character, adds a distinct layer of complexity. As Canada’s longest-standing whisky distillery, J.P. Tasting Rating Guide
1: Light, good for beginners - an aperitif on a summers day, i.e. Glengoyne, Auchentoshan
2: Also good for beginners but with more depth and body - a little stronger than 1, ie. Glenmorangie, Speyburn
3: A dram for everyone, a little more complex so the palate requires a little more experience, i.e. Cragganmore, Macallan
4: A stronger spirit, a big whisky with lots of character and body, excellent after dinner, i.e. Lagavulin, Laphroaig
