Laphroaig is a legendary distillery on the Isle of
Islay. Founded in 1815 by Donald and Alexander Johnston, it is very much a love it or hate it whisky having a very medicinal peaty and smoky flavour. Beam Suntory currently owns Laphroaig, and the distillery produces over three million litres of alcohol each year.
It proudly holds the Royal Warrant of King Charles III, personally bestowed upon it during his visit to the distillery in 1994 when he held the title of Prince of Wales.
Laphroaig 10 Year Old, a definitive Islay peated single malt, embodies 200 years of passionate tradition perfected by master distillers. A staple for connoisseurs and a peaty rite of passage, its unique flavour profile comes from malted barley cold-smoked over peat fires, a rare technique among distilleries.
The grain is then dried over those same fires and tossed on our malting floor facing out to sea. It spends the next 10 years in ex-Bourbon barrels. A full decade is what it takes to create this full-bodied 10 year old whisky. With a bold smoky flavour, notes of salty seaweed, and a lingering sweetness.
Official Tasting Notes
Colour - The sparkling gold appearance, natural colour and narrow trails on the glass all signal rich character.
Nose - Peat smoke, seaweed scent and a 'medicinal' essence hit the nose with a hint of sweetness.
Palate - Surprising sweetness with hints of salt and layers of peatiness.
Finish - Long and lingering. Wait for the sweet seaweed afterglow.
