Mortlach is Dufftown's oldest distillery dating back to 1823. James Findlater founded Mortlach as the first legal distillery in Dufftown, establishing it over sixty years before the next distillery, Glenfiddich, opened in the town. The distillery has changed hands several times over the years, and today, Diageo, the world’s largest drinks company, owns Mortlach.
The distillery has six stills - three wash stills and three spirit stills - all different sizes. This gives them the ability to make slightly different styles of spirit. Mortlach whisky has a strong reputation with both drinkers of single malts and blenders due to the high quality of spirit distilled there.
Gordon and MacPhail are independent bottlers and whisky merchants based at Elgin on Speyside. They buy spirit, from various distilleries, when it is first made, and mature it in their own casks. The family that owns the company, the Urquhart family, are now on the fourth generation of whisky maturation, bottling and distilling experts.
This whisky is part of their Distillery Labels range, these are often from distilleries which historically did not have their own bottling, only selling in cask mainly for blending. This 15 year old bottling has a very rich and fruity flavour.
Official Tasting Notes
Colour - Dark Gold.
Aroma - Distinctly malty initially with fresh aromas of a woodland hedgerow. Delicate Sherry notes linger and weave with rich indulgent toffee, sweet liquorice, and orange marmalade.
Taste - Reminiscent of a Black Forest cake; the initial sweetness develops into fruity blackcurrant jam, maraschino cherry, and creamy vanilla. Freshly peeled orange notes add a fresh lift.
Finish - Well rounded; hints of candied citrus fruits and oak complement the lingering malty edge.

Tasting Rating Guide
1: Light, good for beginners - an aperitif on a summers day, i.e. Glengoyne, Auchentoshan
2: Also good for beginners but with more depth and body - a little stronger than 1, ie. Glenmorangie, Speyburn
3: A dram for everyone, a little more complex so the palate requires a little more experience, i.e. Cragganmore, Macallan
4: A stronger spirit, a big whisky with lots of character and body, excellent after dinner, i.e. Lagavulin, Laphroaig
