On the Cowder Estate in the Scottish Highlands lies Royal Brackla Distillery, founded by Captain William Fraser in 1812. A distillery quite literally 'Fit for a King', King William IV granted the "Royal" status to Brackla whisky in 1835, making it the first whisky distillery to receive a Royal Warrant. They have tall stills and they distil very slowly which gives greater reflux (contact with the copper). This makes the a light, delicate and perfumed spirit. The style of the distilleries offerings is opulent and fruity, with rich sherry notes. Each Royal Brackla expression finishes its maturation in first-fill sherry casks, which the distillery directly sources from Spain.
Over the years, the company has changed hands and faced closures several times. John Dewar & Sons Ltd, a subsidiary of Bacardi operate the distillery today, having taken over in 1998. Bacardi have consistently invested in the distillery, preserving its heritage while modernising its operations.
The Mossburn is from the owners of the Torabhaig distillery on the Isle of Skye. The Vintage Casks range are a collection of Single Malt Scotch Whiskies each issuing from a strictly limited and select batch of casks. Each numbered release will only ever yield a finite number of bottles.
Mossburn distilled this bottling of Royal Brackla in 2008, bottling it in March 2025 at 16 years old. It spent 14 years in a Refill Hogshead before finishing in Monbazillac Wine Casks. Bottled at its cask strength of 54.9% ABV, this decadent and refined whisky showcases the regal elegance and rich Highland character for which the distillery is renowned.

Tasting Rating Guide
1: Light, good for beginners - an aperitif on a summers day, i.e. Glengoyne, Auchentoshan
2: Also good for beginners but with more depth and body - a little stronger than 1, ie. Glenmorangie, Speyburn
3: A dram for everyone, a little more complex so the palate requires a little more experience, i.e. Cragganmore, Macallan
4: A stronger spirit, a big whisky with lots of character and body, excellent after dinner, i.e. Lagavulin, Laphroaig
