Siblings takes its name from the brother-and-sister founders of West Midlands Distillery, with the casks symbolising their Black Country and Birmingham region. They represent the pre-industrial Woodlands, Springs and Hunting Grounds, and post industrialisation of mining, steel and manufacturing.
Two closely matched first-fill ex-bourbon casks from Oz Tyler formed the pair. Sibling casks with the same origin, then given two very different lives. Both casks were brought to England and recoupered down to approximately 100 litres. The smaller format increases the spirit's interaction with the oak, allowing the first-fill bourbon character to become a defining part of both whiskies. Before filling, one cask was peat-smoked, while the other was left untouched. The result is a yin-and-yang release - unmistakably related, but dramatically different in personality.
This bottling is the peat-smoked cask - the same family DNA, transformed by a cask that was smoked with peat before filling. The underlying bourbon sweetness remains, but it sits beneath a substantial layer of clean, enveloping smoke. Notes of peat smoke, caramel, vanilla, honey, muted fresh fruit and a warming spice. Smoky rather than overtly medicinal.
Like their previous releases, each bottle is individually hand painted by the distillery team, as well as one side of the outer sleeve. The colours depict the cask and flavour profile, the key to which is inside the packaging. It comes presented in their signature fan box, with a map of the Black Country and Birmingham area.
