The Harvey brothers established Bruichladdich Distillery on the shore of Loch Indaal on the Isle of
Islay in 1881. Rémy Cointreau currently owns the distillery. In contrast to many neighboring distilleries, Bruichladdich produces a lighter and softer unpeated whisky. Alongside the Bruichladdich range, they also produce Port Charlotte, a heavily peated range, and Octomore, an extremely heavily peated range. They style themselves as Progressive Hebridean Distillers, and are always looking for new ideas and initiatives.
Bruichladdich Distillery crafted the Black Art: Edition 11 using pre-renaissance casks (pre-2001) that have been maturing on Islay for 24 years. Only the Head Distiller, Adam Hannett, knows what has gone into creating this precious 24-year-old single malt, making the final recipe a mystery.
Official Tasting Notes
Nose - Dried fruits, leather and a hint of citrus, followed by a fresh sea breeze. Sweet fruit and floral notes come to the fore, with poached pear, delicate rose hip syrup, black cherry, and sweet mango. The complexity of the single malt is apparent, with cedar and mellow oak. Complemented with butterscotch, praline, honey, and a hint of cinnamon. Warming oats balance with fragrant notes of rose and pear drops.
Palate - Dried fruits, dates, raisins, barley sugar, leather and oak open on the palate. Followed by butterscotch sweetness, praline and hints of coconut and fresh citrus. Sweet apple and pear marry with toasted oak, warming wood spice, dark plums and marzipan. Layers of depth opening with each sip.
Finish - Oak and dried fruit come to the fore. Christmas cake notes of sultanas, fig, marzipan, and lingering honey add to the beautifully rounded finish.
