The Harvey brothers established Bruichladdich Distillery on the shore of Loch Indaal on the Isle of
Islay in 1881. Rémy Cointreau currently owns the distillery. In contrast to many neighboring distilleries, Bruichladdich produces a lighter and softer unpeated whisky. Alongside the Bruichladdich range, they also produce Port Charlotte, a heavily peated range, and Octomore, an extremely heavily peated range. They style themselves as Progressive Hebridean Distillers, and are always looking for new ideas and initiatives.
Port Charlotte, named after the neighbouring village, is a peaty version, more like a typical Islay and the style the distillery made when it first opened in 1886.
Matured in Syrah casks, this release pushes the heavily peated spirit to new heights. The bold influence of the wine pairs beautifully with the refined peat smoke, delivering rich notes of succulent berries, sweet strawberries, and hints of warm citrus.
Official Tasting Notes
Colour - Burnt orange.
Nose - Caramel sweetness, followed by a fresh fruit medley and subtle hints of peat smoke. Strawberry, red apple, apricot jam and mixed berries from the Syrah casks come through. Underpinned by oak and lingering smoke. Gentle spices from the oak, ginger, marzipan and honey complement the fruity character, heighted with smoked sweetness.
Palate - Charred oak and elegant barbeque peat smoke, balanced with sweet fruit. Vibrant notes of candied peel, fresh mango, brown sugar and bubble gum. Adding a lightness and complexity, cutting through the smoke. A drop of water draws out the aromatic oak, as lavender and herbal notes combine with honey, ground ginger and roasted coffee beans.
Finish - Fruity, oak sweetness remain, and waves of peat smoke are unmistakable. Toasted Brazil nuts, coconut and cocoa powder bring a delicate creaminess, while hints of dried seaweed linger.
