Welsh whisky production that began in 1894, when Penderyn Distillery crafted its first whisky, marking the revival of this tradition in Wales. Penderyn was first conceived in the late 1990s, by a group of friends chatting in a pub in the Welsh Valleys, about establishing the first whisky distillery in Wales in over a century. They selected the village of Penderyn as the location due to the site's abundant supply of fresh natural spring water. They have since open two more distilleries, in Llandudno in 2021 and in Swansea in 2023.
Penderyn have a unique single-pot still designed by Dr David Faraday, a descendant of the ground-breaking Victorian scientist, Michael Faraday. Installed in 2000, it produces a spirit at an industry high draw of 92%, meaning Penderyn's whiskies are light, fruity and flavoursome.
Although primarily producing single malt Welsh whisky, Penderyn Distillery also makes Merlyn Cream Liqueur, Five Vodka and Brecon Gin.
Penderyn Legend is a Madeira-finish single malt whisky, bottled at 40% ABV.
Official Tasting Notes
Nose - Aromas of fresh apples and citrus fruits intermingle with cream fudge and sultana raisins to create a complex yet fresh, clean and well-balanced whisky.
Palate - Incredibly smooth and both fresh and rich dried fruits abound. Delicate and sweet on the palate with just a hint of bitterness to remain refreshing.
Finish - A long aftertaste of Madeira cake and sultanas.
